Lady Brabourne College, with its lush green lawns and gardens opposite the Park Circus Maidan is one of the premier Institutions for women's education in India. Established by the Government of Bengal in July 1939 and named after the wife of Lord Brabourne, the Governor of Bengal till February 1939, the college made a humble beginning with 35 Muslim students and 9 faculty members in a rented house in Park Circus. The foundation stone of the building in which it is presently housed was laid on 26th August 1939 by Sir J. Woodhead the then Governor of Bengal. Ever since the college has expanded structurally and academically earning the reputation of having an excellent academic environment and has celebrated it’s Diamond Jubilee on the 26th August, 1999.

Administration

Administrative Head: The Principal, Professor Siuli Sarkar, M.A., Ph.D (C.U.)
She is assisted by the office staff while various committees formed by the Teachers' Council aid and concur with her on all administrative matters.

Affiliation

All undergraduate courses conducted by the college are affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Being affiliated to Calcutta University, the College follows the existing B.A./B.Sc. (1+1+1 system) under New regulation introduced by the University in 2005. At the post graduate level Calcutta University has permitted the college to conduct autonomous M.Sc courses in Geography, Microbiology, Physics and Mathematics and M.A. course in English Literatures.

The college has been reaccredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 'A level' certification in December 2014.

Recommended for Second Phase of CPE 2016-2021. Lady Brabourne College is the 1st college so far in West Bengal to be recommended for the second phase.

An international seminar 'Beyond the Veil: Muslim Women in South Asia' is being organized by the Women's Studies Centre of Lady Brabourne College and the Dept. of History of Diamond Harbour Women's University, on Thursday, 24th August 2017 at Lady Brabourne College. The seminar aims to discuss and deliberate on Muslim women in South Asia from a gender-sensitive socio-historical perspective.
