Politics of Gender: Family, Community and the State
Concept Note for the Workshop

In recent years, feminist theory and activism have transformed our understanding of politics. Earlier political activism centred around the state focusing on political and social rights and struggle for universal suffrage. The shift to the pivotal slogan 'personal is political' in the 1960s covered a much wider range and raised a variety of complex questions affecting lives and lived experiences of women across the world. Altogether, the development of feminist thought and movements challenged and re-presented conventional understanding of the processes and meanings of politics. In recent decades, developments in feminist critical theory and layered engagements with the notions such as power and empowerment have also affected a sea-change in the relationship between statist/ electoral confrontational politics, communities and everyday experiences.

The intense and closely-knit workshop is an attempt to flag some of the issues addressed in this vast literature and fields of praxis. The lectures and discussions offered will range from explorations of theories to discussions about the specificities of the Indian context. For example, discussions and talks on the role of women in mainstream politics, including the debate on women's reservation will be part of the workshop curriculum. Contested and debated areas such as women’s participation in the political and social movements, historically and in the contemporary period, in various parts of the world will also form part of the lectures and discussions. Relationships of inequality in the family and its larger consequences, issues of community based personal laws, and the mediation of caste, class and community in women's relationship with the state will be addressed in course of the workshop. The themes mentioned here are only illustrative of the range of issues and debates which are part of the workshop proceedings.
